AUDUBON KICKS OFF NEW YEAR WITH PROGRAM ON BLUEBIRDS

At the first Northern Neck Audubon Society meeting of 2005 on Monday, February 7, the guest speaker will be Anne Little, Secretary of the Virginia Bluebird Society (VBS).

Little, one of the founders of VBS and one-time Treasurer of the North American Bluebird Society, will present a slide show on bluebirds and discuss how to attract them to your yard and ensure their safety once you do. There will also be information on other native cavity nesting birds in Virginia and how to help increase their chances for survival. She will also speak about VBS efforts to preserve and increase Virginia’s bluebird population; and will give advice on how you can help. Little has been instrumental in setting up many bluebird trails throughout the state, including Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond.

Also on display at the slide show will be examples of nests and eggs from various cavity nesters, and samples of predator guards and boxes used by VBS. There will be handouts for box and predator guard designs, monitoring protocol and record keeping.
