LOCAL AUDUBON PLANS BIRDING EDUCATION COURSE

Beginning next month, the Northern Neck Audubon Society (NNAS) will present a free course entitled "Improve Your Birding Skills" to area residents who wish to improve their abilities to identify birds both by sight and by sound.

The course will consist of five individual sessions, which will meet at Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., on the first Monday of the month, February through June, 2006.  Course participants will be welcome to stay and attend the regular NNAS monthly meetings immediately following the sessions.  The first session, "The Value of Birds and Introduction to Bird Identification", will be presented by wildlife biologist Sandy Spencer on Monday, February 6th.

The remaining sessions include:

March 6 - Birds at Home - Different habitats, seasonal changes, and backyard invitation - attracting birds with specific plants and feeder foods - presented by Audrey Brainard.

April 3 - Narrowing the Possibilities - Bird Classification, shapes, feathers, silhouettes, beaks and patterns - presented by Bob Adrience

May 8 - Birding by Ear - Bird calls and songs for identification by sound - presented by Rae Hinch and Barbara Groff

June 1 - Birds of Summer - Where to look and what to look for - presented by B. J. Norris

Each session will be convened by NNAS Education Chairman Jim Groff, who, along with NNAS President Peter Saam, put the course outline together.  "We are fortunate to have several outstanding birders in our local club who are willing to share their skills with us," said Groff.  "Sandy Spencer is a biologist with the National Fish and Wildlife Service.  Audrey Brainard is a former educator and national science consultant.  Bob Adrience and Barbara Groff are former teachers.  Rae Hinch is an NNAS board member who is active in regional conservation groups; and B. J. Norris is a former NNAS president and one of the area's most skilled birders."
