The Northern Neck Audubon Society went to Menokin for the October
bird walk. We were joined by Liz Mesec of the Westmoreland Bird Club and
Teta Kain, naturalist from the Middle peninsula. We were warmly welcomed
by Martin King, President of the Menokin Foundation, and Gregory Burkett,
Foundation Administrator.
The wind kept the bird movement restricted and impeded our efforts
to detect them. However, we did see the following species:
Rock Dove
Northern Cardinal
Bald Eagle
Eastern Bluebird
Wild Turkey
Eastern Phoebe
Red tailed Hawk
Black Vulture
Turkey Vulture
Brown Thrasher
Tufted Titmouse
Carolina Chickadee
Northern Flicker
Red bellied Woodpecker
Blue Jay
American Crow
Butterflies:
Cloudless Sulphur
Gray Hairstreak
Checkered Skipper
Common Buckeye
Common Sooty Wing
American Lady
Fungi
Amanita Vitosa
Ramaria Formosa (coral fungus)
The Chapter will have a follow-up walk during the Spring migration,
probably in April or May.
