As usual at this time of year, I am writing this column
(and putting together this newsletter) from Down
Under. Cardinals, Chickadees and migrating ducks have
given way to Wattlebirds, Superb Fairy Wrens and Black
Swans in our day to day observations. And, its summer
weather!
What a great roll-up for the first segment of our
Improve Your Birding Skills offering. It was a huge
success. Sandy Spencer provided a wonderful
outline about the value of birds to ecology and society,
why their conservation is so important, the current
threats they face, and how learning to identify birds
can be a big help toward the conservation of birds. This
was followed by a broad overview of how to organize your
study of birds, some examples of visual, vocal, and
behavioral clues, and some good study resources and
materials.
In case youve missed this first session, theres
more to come. Make sure you read the details of
future segments in the next column and be sure to be
there on Monday. We are deeply indebted to Jim Groff
for the work he has done to coordinate this
educational series. And, as he said: We are fortunate
to have several outstanding birders in our local club
who are willing to share their skills with us. Sandy
Spencer is a biologist with the National Fish and
Wildlife Service. Audrey Brainard is a former
educator and national science consultant. Bob
Adriance and Barbara Groff are former
teachers. Rae Hinch is an NNAS board member who
is active in regional conservation groups; and B. J.
Norris is a former NNAS president and one of the
areas most skilled birders.
One other reminder:- With spring just around the
corner, make sure you familiarize yourself with our new
Chesapeake Trail. It is an wonderful opportunity
for all you grandparents to introduce your progeny to
the outdoors. The trail is short enough even for very
young children, ending at a secluded overlook over a
Salt Water Marsh. A big THANK YOU to Tom Gregory
and his team for making this accessible and an equally
big THANK YOU to Audrey Brainard and her team for
the superb interpretive educational material along the
way.
Thanks for listening.
