Attracting Bluebirds
  By Fred Witschey

The bluebird mating season is fast approaching. Male bluebirds are now scouting the area in quest of suitable nesting sites, so remember to clean out your old bluebird boxes and to mount new boxes as soon as possible.

In each box that we sell, we include an instruction sheet for erecting, attracting, and monitoring bluebird nesting boxes.

Last year we also included a sheet on predator control. We also made an alteration to the boxesa predrilled hole large enough for a loose fitting nail to be inserted through the front into the side of the box. The side cannot be opened without pulling out the nail. This makes monitoring easy and keeps animals from opening the box.

Instruction sheets will be available at the Farmers Markets and at meetings. You may also contact me at 453-9090 and I will send you the sheets. In addition I will meet with interested people a half hour prior to the April meetings to discuss problems and solutions to attracting, maintaining, and monitoring bluebird houses.
